Spaniard Roberto Carballés won the first edition of the Murcia Open Challenger after beating Sweden’s Mikael Ymer 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 in the final at the Murcia Tennis Club after two hours and twenty minutes of play.
The 26-year-old from Tenerife, ranked 113th in the world, made the most of his status as the second seed to defeat the young Swede, who is only 20 years old and ranked 200th in the ATP. Carballés, with one ATP title to his name (Quito, 2018), won his fifth Challenger tournament in this way, a triumph that allows him to add 80 points in the professional ranking and continue to keep intact his options of entering the final draw of the next edition of Roland Garros.
Carballés came from behind to beat Ymer, who lost the first set 2-6. The Canarian, supported by the Murcian crowd, overcame the deficit to win the second set 6-0 and in the third set he sealed his victory with a 6-2 win.
The final was held in front of nearly a thousand spectators on the centre court of the Murcia Club de Tenis 1919, an institution that celebrates its centenary with this competition – among other events – which distributes 46,600 euros in prize money.
