Griekspoor reigned in Murcia after eight days of intense tennis in our club. The player from the Netherlands played a great tournament, very solid, and managed to win the final, even coming from behind in the first set against Roberto Carballés. He finally won the title by 3-6, 7-5 and 6-3.
The Spanish tennis player, top seed, reached Sunday’s final after imposing his tennis against Bourgue, Furness, Rybakov and Pablo Llamas. He did not even drop a set until he faced Griekspoor.
Carballés was the great sensation for the crowd, who supported him until the end in search of victory, which would have been his second in Murcia after winning in 2019. But other tennis players and other matches also caught the eye in a tournament that was, once again, exciting.
In fact, one of them was American Emilio Nava. After struggling in the qualifiers for the first two days, he managed to sneak into the draw and face the third seed, Australian Marc Polmans. And there came the surprise: he made it through to the second round, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. He could not advance any further from then on as Collarini sent him home.
Another match in the quarter-finals came as a particular surprise. It was Griekspoor, who had serious problems -more than Carballés- to reach the final. Drawn against the Serbian Miljan Zekic, 321 in the world at the time, he had to suffer a 0-6 in the second set, a response to a previous 6-0. In the third set, the Dutchman imposed his tennis to win 6-3 and advance to the semifinals.
The Spaniards were unlucky. Carballés, the big favourite, was the one who got the furthest. He was followed by Kuhn, who lost 7-5, 6-1 to Flavio Cobolli in the quarter-finals. Ortega-Olmedo was knocked out in the last 16, and the rest in the first round.
There was also no luck for our country’s tennis players in the doubles. Only the Barroso-Carballés pairing advanced from the first round, although in this case they managed to reach the final on Friday afternoon. However, they were unable to overcome the Italian pairing of Cobolli and Brancaccio, who won 6-3, 7-6.
