The second edition of the ATP Challenger Costa Cálida Region of Murcia is finally here. After a forced postponement during 2020 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Real Murcia Club de Tenis 1919 will once again be able to host this beautiful tournament, which will put the whole Region on the international sporting map.
This was stated by Marcos Ortuño, Counselor of Presidency, Tourism and Sports of Region of Murcia, who praised the holding of the tournament and its organisation: «After such difficult months for everyone due to the pandemic, one of the best tennis tournaments that take place in our country is back and returns to the Region of Murcia, which is once again at the centre of interest in top-level competitive sport. For the regional government, the impact that this tournament has on both sport and tourism is fundamental for promoting the image of the Region», he added, and contributes to «continuing to consolidate the Community as a venue for major events, favoured both by its climate and by its infrastructures, facilities and its range of services and leisure activities, all within a framework capable of offering all the guarantees of security, such as those offered by the Real Murcia Club de Tenis 1919».
For his part, Antonio Saura, president of the Real Murcia Club de Tenis 1919, hopes that the tournament «will once again break all expectations. The celebration of this second edition means that it is beginning to consolidate its place on the international and national tennis scene, which makes us very proud. We want the tournament to become a hallmark for the Region of Murcia and it is designed to last over time.
Lorenzo Martínez, CEO of the Spanish Tennis Federation, took the opportunity to reaffirm «our full confidence in the organisation. Bringing tournaments to Murcia is synonymous with success. The level of players, organisation and sponsors is a sign that things are being done well».
In this second edition, players of the stature of Roberto Carballés, Griekspoor and Polmans will be taking part. The Spaniard, who is one of the best 100 players in the world at the moment, was the champion of the first edition and will be looking to repeat his success on the courts of the Real Murcia Club de Tenis. Other Spanish players such as Javier Barranco, Carlos Gimeno, Nicola Kuhn and Mario Vilella will also be taking part in the tournament.
The tournament will be streamed live on the ATP website, but five matches (two quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the final) will also be broadcast on Eurosport and LaLiga Sports TV, which will bring the ATP Challenger Costa Cálida Región de Murcia to millions of homes not only in Spain, but all over the world.
So, once again, international tennis will have its eyes on the Real Murcia Club de Tenis to see if this second edition is as spectacular as the first, in which, apart from the triumph of Roberto Carballés, Nico Almagro said goodbye and Carlos Alcaraz, who was only 15 years old at the time, burst onto the national tennis scene.
